Image Afrique, the festival for contemporary African photography, has taken place annually in Basel since 2012. The core focus of the festival is to showcase the five winners of POPCAP, the prize for contemporary African photography. These artists’ works, presented in a large format in public spaces, show a fresh and more nuanced view of Africa. The overall aim of the festival events is to heighten public awareness of Africa. All events are publicly accessible.
Image Afrique, is an initiative of piclet.org, an international online portal showcasing the portfolios of contemporary photographers, which was launched in Berlin in 2009 by Swiss media artist Benjamin Füglister. The exhibitions are carried out in collaboration with Verein Liaison, a non-profit organisation in Zurich.

Contemporary Trends - Historical Views
In order to explain the current upswing in African photography, Image Afrique considers it important to also explore the origins and history of African photography. It is for this reason that they entered into partnership with both African Photography Initiatives in Basel and Burundi, and HIPUganda in Amsterdam and Uganda. Both initiatives work with archival photographs that offer a contrast to contemporary trends, and work in close collaboration with institutions and photographers to bring the rich visual heritage of Africa to life.
Driven by an enthusiasm for the rich visual heritage of the African continent and in particular photography, the African Photography Initiatives collective decided to create a website devoted to African photography. African Photography Initiatives is involved in various projects that in one way or another aim to propagate the rich visual heritage of Africa.
A History In Progress Uganda (HIPUganda) is a collective that collects and publishes photographs taken from archives both in and relating to Uganda. In doing so they open up space to discuss, react to and think about the history of Uganda in photography.
